Chapter Ten

Make Way for Mel!

"Seriously, get the hell out of my way!"

Melpomene sped through the kitchen and knocked into Chorie. Ignoring her sister's yelp, the Muse of Tragedy dove for the two glasses of freshly squeezed ambrosia on the table. She guzzled the first cup and scooped the second into her free hand.

"But the other juice is for Clio," whined Chorie. "Right, you don't care." As she limped to a safe distance, Chorie burst into song and sang higher with each step. "Have a bright and beautiful morning, Melpomene." The Muse of Dance hit the high C on the last syllable, piercing Mel's eardrums like a hypodermic needle.

Mel didn't stop drinking the second cup of juice but responded with the lingering sway of her middle finger. When she finished, Mel glanced around the kitchen and found herself alone. "Good." Another wave of pain hit her in the back of her skull. Two full glasses of ambrosia, and the migraines continued. She felt her forehead throb to the beat of her pulsing veins.

Then the grandfather clock struck eleven in the morning and Mel's head descended into eleven levels of hell. Mel groaned as she held her head in both hands. She wobbled out of the kitchen, into the hall, hurried past the soon-to-be grand-firewood clock, and climbed the stairs without vomiting. Lucky for her, the shared bathroom on the second floor was empty. She stumbled inside before the door slammed behind her.

Swearing continuously, Mel opened the cabinet under the sink and dug through the shelves filled with various toiletries and perfumes. "Come on, where are you?" She rooted through the crazy collection of half-used products until her fingers found the bottle of Relief Belief. The pills were decades old and carried a price tag of fifty silvers. They were not as efficient as a gold offering, but they were easier on the wallet. The fresh ambrosia juice was cheap, but dear gods, the stuff took its sweet time. Mornings like these called for the good shit.

She popped the top then shook five pills straight into her mouth. Mel steeled herself as she chewed the pills dry. She whimpered when the screaming sour tang hit her tongue and saliva flooded her mouth. After she swallowed, the hangover melted into low-grade headache and her whole body became awash with a soothing buzz.

"That's better." Reveling in the relief, Melpomene rolled her head side to side. She stretched her arms and reached behind her neck to rub the sore muscles. "Hit by lightning and smacked with a hangover in less than twenty-four hours. It's already a fucked up day."

Mel turned the spigot and let the cold water flow through her fingertips. She splashed water onto her face and brushed the wet fingers through her green hair. As Melpomene peered into the mirror, memories emerged from last night and a smirk grew along her lips. At least she won't be the only one suffering this morning. Every time Hedone summoned more wine behind Calliope's back, Clio grabbed any glass that Mel held.
